Can two picture drawings teach rivaling siblings a thing or two about acceptance even with the most challenging of differences?
Find out as you step into author and illustrator Deborah Freedman’s picture book Scribble where lively eye catching illustrations are created with the simplicity of black lines against the backdrop of the two seemingly incompatible colors, pink and yellow.
Sisters Emma and Lucie differ in their opinion of what is a picture drawing and what is nothing more than a scribble, much like the drawings themselves with their contrasting subject matter and background color.
While the sister’s differences generate an argument, the drawings on the other hand, find beauty, love and acceptance in their unacknowledged differences.
Find the message too deep for a picture book??? Not so, as Freedman uses a non -intrusive approach that is easily felt in the amusing rivalry of the two sisters.
Having had to deal with four sisters as I was growing up I couldn’t help but grin and shake my head. Emma’s insult of Lucie’s drawing of a kitty without ears along with the response Lucie gives her by way of a black marker is hilarious!
Scribble is a definite treat to share with a child or….. perhaps even a sister.
