Vaughn takes a departure from her Kitty Norville werewolf series to write a page-turning standalone fantasy.
In a future on the brink of world war, where Homeland Security has lost control of local militias, comic book writer Evie Walker leaves L.A. to see her dying father in Hope’s Fort, Colo. Worried about her dad and the plot lines of her comic book, Evie finds she can’t sleep one night and wanders into the basement.
Using her flashlight, she finds a large storeroom filled with strange and wonderful artifacts that seem to belong in a museum — a golden fleece, a shiny sword, a beautiful lyre, a cup of chipped clay, tiny boots that might fit a cat…
Evie isn’t sure why, but these items prickle something in her memory and make the hairs on her neck stand up. It gets even weirder when a stranger comes to the door and asks if Evie has what’s she’s looking for – a pair of slippers, like you might wear with a ball gown. Evie is surprised that she knows exactly what the woman needs and where to find it.
But not all of the people who come to the door should be handed what they ask for– and Evie must face a powerful stranger who wants a certain apple and she’ll do just about anything to get her hands on it.
Vaughn cleverly weaves together Greek mythology, fairy tales, and comic book plots with the story of Evie and her family’s unusual legacy as guardians of this very special storeroom.
