This is a change of pace for readers who enjoy Lisa Scottoline’s legal mysteries — or her latest standalone novel, Save Me. Why My Third Husband Will be a Dog is a compilation of her “Chick Wit” columns in the Sunday Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper.
In the introduction , Scottoline shares Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote, “A woman is like a tea bag. You never know how strong she is until she’s in hot water,” as the inspiration for why she started writing books. Scottoline saw strong women in real life, but lamented not finding similar characters in fiction, so she started writing stories with that kind of character.
Her columns for the newspaper are slices of life about mothers, daughters, ex-husbands, pets, fashion trends, real estate ads, consumerism, travel, more pets… there’s a little bit of everything here. And you’ll be sure to see strong, funny, feisty women who get stronger in hot water.
I was touched by her tribute to her dad who was supportive just by being there. Her entries about her mother are sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. The columns that include observations about her dogs (three golden retrievers, one corgi) and cats (Mimi and Vivi) hit a chord with the pet-owner side of me.
The entries are short—only a couple of pages each. It’s the type of book you can either dip into when you have a quick moment or sit and linger with for an hour or two.
I found it interesting to see this glimpse into the real life of this author. I admire her fictional work, and now I like Lisa Scottoline as a person, too.
