“28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds. That is when the world will end.” That is quite a conversation starter, particularly when you take in to account the fact that it is spoken by a giant, demonic-looking rabbit named Frank. Frank is Donnie’s new imaginary friend. Donnie, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, is a high school student in Middlesex, Virginia. As the film begins, Donnie is returning home from an episode of sleepwalking. He has a variety of psychological issues, and sees a therapist who is treating him with antipsychotic medication for schizophrenia.
In his first interaction with Frank, Donnie is led sleepwalking from his home by Frank, who then shares with him the news that the world will be ending soon. While Donnie is out of the house, a jet engine falls through the ceiling of his bedroom. Frank has saved his life, but where is the rest of the plane? Upon returning home, Donnie is informed by his family that the FAA does not know where the engine came from.
Over the following month, Donnie has many subsequent visits from Frank. Events take place in Donnie’s life, and in the lives of certain people surrounding Donnie, that seem to lead him to a strategically planned fate. A fate orchestrated by Frank. Does Donnie truly have psychological problems which lead to these hallucinations, or is Donnie being sent visions in order to save the world? Upon their first meeting, Donnie’s soon to be girlfriend Gretchen (played by Jena Malone) states regarding his name: “It’s like some sort of superhero or something.” Donnie’s reply, “What makes you think I’m not?”
