Romances featuring handsome and deadly vampires are still alive and well. I saw a big chunk of this series on the carts to be re-shelved a few weeks ago. And then I saw it again. The third time I saw multiple copies of these books by Jeaniene Frost I knew someone (or several someones) was talking this up. I wanted to see what the buzz was about.
Cat (Catherine) Crawfield is a vampire hunter. Having made 16 kills, she thinks she’s rather good at it. But then she meets Bones, a much older, stronger vampire than any of the others she has met. Within seconds he’s in control, and he turns her opinion of vampires on its head.
Cat has grown up hearing that all vampires are evil, and that she, as a product of a vampire and human, is essentially evil, too. But Bones shows her how her skills are unique and how some vampires (maybe most vampires) don’t kill when they feed, don’t force themselves on humans, and don’t act like the demons her mother frequently claims they all are.
In exchange for helping Cat find her vampire father, she agrees to train with Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and help him capture some of the truly evil vampires he has been contracted to find. As they get to know one another, they feel an attraction that can’t be ignored…
Halfway to the Grave is the first in the Night Huntress series. It reminds me a lot of the Buffy/Spike romance. Bones even has the trademark platinum locks and British accent. Don’t get me wrong, this is an original story, but that appeal added to my enjoyment of the book. I’m zipping through the whole series now and enjoying every minute of romance and danger!

If you like Halfway to the Grave, you might also like The Kate Daniel Series, by Ilona Andrews. I believe the authors are pretty good buddies too.
I must have resorted and shelved that book 20 times before I said to myself “Hmmm, this must be good.” And I never even realized the Spike and Bones resemblance, perhaps that is why I enjoyed it so much =)
[…] reader suggested reading Ilona Andrews on my blog post for Jeaniene Frost’s Halfway to the Grave. We had reviewed Magic Bites a few years ago, so I picked up On The Edge (the first of the […]
I’m confused, I see two books stating they are the first in the Night Huntress series:

It is confusing — but they are two different series. Night Huntress World (First Drop of Crimson) is a spin-off of the Night Huntress series. Looks like this first book in the Night Huntress World series picks up the story of Spade, one of Bones’ vampire friends.
