One Big Happy Family is a quick read that will put a smile on your face.
Author Lisa Rogak has compiled 50 examples of cross-species friendships. She explains that the parenting instinct in these cases defied the animals’ natural predator instincts. And whether the relationship lasted a lifetime or just a few weeks, when the young animal needed assistance most the adult animal stepped up to the plate. As Rogak writes, “in doing so they serve as an inspiration.”
The pictures are the real draw for this nonfiction book. Every few pages there are darling photos of animals. Brief narratives describe the origins of the relationship. These can be quickly zipped through so you can “oooh” and “aww” your way to the next picture.

Its strange this cropping up now. Yesterday my beloved cat Elmo brought home a baby bird. Instead of his usual torment and cat behaviour he was being soft amd gentle and in a way motherly to it. He curled himself around it and was licking it all over. Can cats get broody? The baby bird is now safely back with its mother I think a kitten may be on the cards!
Animal relationships are fascinating when you start looking into them. In my new book the protagonist has to rediscover the five crucial elements of life, which he does through the minds of five different animal hosts, each showing him, through their relationships with their fellows, a separate element. In researching this book I had to delve into the world of animal psychology and interaction and the more you learn the deeper you realise these animals’ instincts go.
