This is a blatant case of tooting one’s own horn, but how often do you get to say you wrote a book? My first, Read On… Fantasy Fiction was published by Libraries Unlimited on May 30th. It’s a nonfiction guide to the world of fantasy fiction.
I suspect I don’t have to convince anyone who is choosing to read this blog of the value of reading. But everybody is different and it can be challenging to find books that best fit your tastes. Fantasy is a big, varied genre that can satisfy many different kinds of readers if you know where to look. On the other hand, if the first fantasy you pick up is wrong for you, you may decide fantasy isn’t to your tastes and never try it again. My book is designed to help you make selections you will enjoy.
This is a book of nearly one hundred annotated lists, each organized around a theme, character type, writing style, or setting that is common in fantasy. Each list will give you an introduction to that topic and information about six to ten titles that fit the topic. The book also has lists of fantasy fiction that appeal to people who usually read literary fiction, mysteries, historical fiction, romance, and science fiction. There are books that are appropriate for the whole family, books to make you giggle, and plenty of choices for young adult readers. And I’ve done my best to give you a few laughs and a few things to think about as you browse through the lists.
I love fantasy, and I hope you’ll have half as much fun reading my tour of the genre as I had writing it. If you like this book, there are other titles in the series that cover horror and historical fiction. Another Williamsburg librarian, Barry Trott, has a volume on mystery fiction on the way. Whatever kinds of fiction or nonfiction you like, we have books that will help you find titles to fit your tastes.
