Mercy Thompson is a VW mechanic in the Tri-Cities area of Washington State. As hard as she tries to live a normal, quiet life, that’s just not in the cards for her. Mercy’s life is just a tad bit complicated, being a coyote shapeshifter with a werewolf for a neighbor, a former boss that’s a gremlin, and regularly working on a VW bus belonging to one of the local vampires. For in the Tri-Cities, the otherworldly creatures are being forced to the forefront of the public eye, and not everyone is as happy about it as they seem. When Mercy takes in a newly turned wolf, life gets a little more difficult as the pack Alpha, a witch, and the local vampire seethe take an interest.
Patricia Briggs has created an amazing world that is just as grounded in its own reality as it is in our own. Briggs firmly places the world of Fae in our own little quiet world, then populates it with characters that are engaging, intriguing, and complicated. Her plots tell a great story while developing a world of her own making and revealing fascinating layers in her characters’ back stories. While Briggs writes urban fantasy that’s familiar, about werewolves and vampires and fairy folk, the world of the things that go bump in the night feels completely fresh in a publishing market where there’s a vampire or werewolf on every corner.
This is the first in a series and I look forward to learning much more about Mercy Thompson, who has a degree in history, works on VWs, and who can shift into a coyote at will…
