What is your life worth? Imagine a future in which those who are pro-life and those who are pro-choice have fought a second civil war over the sanctity of life. They end the war by compromising on a “Bill of Life” that states all pregnancies must come to term; however, parents and guardians have the right when their child is between the ages of thirteen and eighteen to abort them. The child does not die though. Each and every part of the child is kept alive; thus they are technically still alive, just in separate pieces. This process is known as “unwinding.” Once the unwind order is signed, no changes can be made; even if the parent changes their mind, it is irreversible.
Connor discovers his own unwinding order after investigating tickets he finds, tickets to the Bahamas for everyone in his family, except for him. Connor is a good teen, but like many teens, his emotions can get the better of him and his parents have a hard time controlling him. Risa is a ward of the state of Ohio and the orphanage is overcrowded. She tries to convince the headmaster of her worth, but bungles her chance when she makes five mistakes at her piano recital. Lev rejoices in his destiny at a party solely dedicated to celebrating him and his life. Lev’s family is extremely devoted to their religion; Lev, as the tenth child in his family, is destined to be a human tithe, a human sacrifice. Lev enjoys the attention this brings and is happy to fulfill his destiny.
These three teenagers meet when Connor decides to go AWOL and escape his unwinding order. The book develops through their, and others, alternating viewpoints of what happens to a teenager once the order is signed. Connor, Risa, and Lev’s journey to their future follows their growing recognition of what their life means to them.
Shusterman teases the reader with just enough information to keep going, but continues to build this disturbing view of the future as the storyline develops. Mysterious references to clappers and storked babies are explained more fully later in the book and these people round out the unsettling forces at work in this troubled society. This very thought-provoking book would not leave my mind for days, or truthfully weeks, after reading it. This book has made the rounds of the youth services division and one of my co-workers still gives me grief over the books weeks after reading it. Not for the faint-hearted, especially as the reader learns more about the unwinding process, this disturbing novel will pluck at your mind and have you wondering what your life is worth.
I started reading this weekend…intense and thought provoking, hoping to finish later this week.
Your family is your safe house. They love you. You can trust them. Or can you? For Connor Lassiter, Risa Ward, and Lev Calder, no one can be trusted. They are runaway Unwinds – teenagers who are signed up to be dismembered, so their body parts can be donated to people in need of a transplant. Connor’s parents thought he was a troublemaker, while Lev’s tithed him to follow their strict religion. Risa was to be unwound to cut orphanage costs. These three teens just want a chance at life, is that a crime? In their world, it is.
In Unwind, Neal Shusterman has written a thrilling science fiction novel testing the bounds of love, fate, and belief. From tense situations and thought-provoking ideas, to great flashbacks and creative descriptions, this book kept me sitting on the edge of my seat, not wanting to put it down until I was finished. Told through alternating viewpoints, hints were scattered throughout the story, and I had to wait a few chapters before I could connect the missing pieces. Though this sporadic way of story telling, along with the present tense of the story, could be irritating at times, it kept the book interesting. In comparison to other books in its genre, Unwind outshines them all. Neal Shusterman has put an exciting twist on science fiction, making the story very realistic and romantic. There were also character flaws, which made me feel more empathetic, and I was able to connect with the characters.
Unwind, probably one of the best books I’ve read in a while, even beating the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. This compelling book just can’t be put down, even if you’re reading at 1:00 a.m. Trust me, I know. It’s a bit hard at first to take in how the story is told, the present tense is slightly irritating, but soon as the plot develops, it doesn’t matter how it’s told. The characters themselves make the book excellent while the plot keeps the reader going on and on through the story. True, the author, Neal Shusterman, leaves many holes at the beginning, every thing is tied together for the outstanding conclusion.
I just finished this book–it was absolutely amazing and I plan on recommending it to everyone!
I was intrigued when I heard folks talking about the story — but hesitant to open the cover because I was worried about how depressing it would be… You know how you have to be in the right frame of mind to read something that you know will be difficult to get through? The concept is disturbing – no doubt about it. But I wasn’t depressed at the end. Schusterman leaves lots of room for hope that things will change. Excellent book. Like Jay said, you can’t put it down once you get going.
i loved this book(UNWIND)!!! im 15yrs old.it was suspenseful in alot of areas.i just finished it 2 daysz ago and i was impressed. what catched my attention was the cover of the book.it looked……….like a mystery somewhat. nice job!
this was a book that was chosen for book club, i picked it up a bit late (on friday) and found out i had to read it by tuesday, but once i started i couldnt put it down. the concept was a bit disturbing, but i could see how it could tie in to what is happening today. i really enjoyed it and reccommended it to some of my friends!
My teacher started reading this book to the class, at first I thought it wasnt that good of a book but then it just got way better quickly. The school year ended before she finished the book, so I plan on buying it. This book is even better than the Twilight series I just finished!!!!!!!!
A brilliant, disturbing, and thought-provoking book.
This book was incredible. I couldn’t help but devour it in one sitting. Neal Shusterman paints a realistic, thought-provoking picture that keeps you up until you’re done.
Also, for a good book to contrast this against, pick up Nancy Farmer’s The House of the Scorpion.
Neal Shusterman does what every good author should do. He creates a believable and compelling work. You go into this book thinking one way and coming out having your image of the world shifted. Not enought to throw you off balance but just enough to make you stop and think.
A story set in the not-to-distance future seems all to real. Connected to the same issues which you see today (abortion). The value of life. It touches on very real problems but takes them up a notch.
The characters are amazing (as with many of his stories), they are true humanity, sometimes corrupted, but just trying to survive. Even the side characters are well thought out and don’t become just another character. They way they react is very real.
I found this book in a libary (I had wanted to buy it a month before but lacked the cash). I read it in one sitting. Once you pick up this book you will not be able to put it down.
I loved this book, I thought it looked interesting so I got it for my brother. He wasn’t reading it so I grabbed it and just could not for the life of me put it down. I stayed up until about 6 am reading finishing this book.
I can’t wait to read more of Neal Shusterman’s books!
i didnt stay up till six am, but i did read it for about two hrs. straight. it wz magnificent, touching, all in all, REALLYYY GOOD!
It was so good! I don’t think it’s better than the Twilight Series but just as good. I picked it up at midnight last night and didn’t put it down till 3:30. By then, I had finished it…
By the way, will there be a sequel or anything?
This book was so amazing! I picked it up because the cover intrigued me, but I LOVED it for the story. I’ve never read anything like this, it’s one of those books that really make you think. I believe this book could be just as popular as the Twilight series if it keeps getting recommended. W00T!
ok ok.. im doing a project on this book because it was so amazing
well i wanted to dray a picture but I dont have to book to draw the Harvest Camp (chop shop) how is described in the but i can find i nowhere online
i was hoping someone could help me ?
also “everlost” is a wonderful book by neal shusterman
:)
[…] Another Review of Unwind […]
Unwind was amazing book by him and me and my book club(Brittny Asper, Nick A., , , Cassie Eatin, Rosie Eerwin, Reavn D., Kyle Milborn, Juston S.Alex Schaca, Hayden Sartorise) had read it and fell in love with neal shusterman he is one of my favorite author now and same with my book club.
omg ij loved this book, it really started to make me thing about how i treat my parents and some of the crazy things that i have done. cause if the book were reality then well i probably wouldnt be writing lol
is there going to be a sequel
This book “UNWIND” is just simply amazing. I want to recommend this book to everyone I know. I don’t understand why this book is not on every book shelf. I hope this becomes a bestseller and made into a movie. The plot is so set up for a movie!
i loved this book. i have never read anything from this author, but i think i’ll be looking for more of his books. i read unwind in one sitting i started and didnt stop untill way past my bedtime. i would recommend it to anyone.
-will there be a sequel ?
Everlost by Neal Shusterman is also a wonderful book!
Other books I recommend from him are Duckling Ugly and Dread Locks.
This book was filled with tons of imagery, and I couldn’t help but picture the entire novel like a movie playing in my head. From the trailer at night, to the ending credits in my dream, this book would never leave my head (until I was finished of course). I recommended this book to most of my friends. They all loved it, too! I doubt to be seeing a sequel anytime soon; I mean the book was pretty self explanatory on what happens after the last page ended. Anyways…I give UNWIND a 5 star rating, a definite journey of decisions and the struggles life might soon become.
This has probably been one of the best books I’ve read ever. It was so suspenseful, I simply couldn’t put it down. So amazing. The plot is great, and it really got me thinking about the whole pro-life/pro-choice issue. I really loved the characters and the way they developed, and some parts were so disturbing and vivid. A great book, I’d recommend it for anyone.
Wow. I actually am the type of teen that hates reading. I would start books in school that were required to read and not even finish half the book. But this was an outstanding book. I enjoyed it so much, i even ENCOURAGED other people to read it. I’ve never told someone to read a book before! After i finished i mentally thought about what i just read. Does anyone else think this would be an extremely good movie?
i think this is the best book ever definatly should become a movie and have a sequel hopefuly
this book is the bomb man i read it in like 3 days i could not put it down i think this is the best book i have ever read if anyone has not read this book there are freakin crazy. im going to buy this book to keep for my self this is a book i would read over and over again at points this book made me cry and very mad i dont see why parents would send off there own kids to get unwind to be choped up or to be bassicaly be killed thats wat made me mad i cant wait to read this book again
Unwind has taught me that I don’t have to be afraid to say “I don’t know”. (That’s the one quote that I couldn’t forget, even months after finishing the book.)
Because of that, my views of life has changed forever.
[…] Blogging for a Good Book Bookshelves of Doom (Original review that got me interested in the book!) Presenting Lenore Ready When You Are, CB […]
this was by far one of the best books I’ve ever read. finished it in about a day…its just that good
I loved this book and was able to finish it in one day. This book is so hard to put down! It made me extreamly angry to think parents could do that to their children. It really sparked my emotions and this book meant a lot to me! I cried from anger and frustration. I hate how kids are treated now, but to read something like that where kids are used as extra parts, pisses me off. I loved the book it makes me want to do something more with my life! GO CONNOR!!! Risa and Lev 2!
This was one of the best, most thought provoking novels I ever read! I finished the book yesterday and I just cant get the story out of my head. It really makes me think about what my life is worth and who I can really trust. I do admit it was a bit…unsettling and not for the faint of heart.
When I read the part about the process of Unwinding I even cried. Anyways—MUCH better than Twilight I can say that!
I love this book! I finished reading this two days ago, and I think it is so cool! Neal Shusterman wrote this in a very good way, and he made me angry and stunned at some times.. it was like I was there in the story… good job!
does anyone know other nice books to read? so I don’t have to quit the reading;)
This is one of three books that I’ve ever read that has made me cry.
It is a highly compelling read that I couldn’t put down.
The unwinding is written with so much detail I had to cry in sympathy for Ronald and the reunion of Harlan was so emotion tears started welling up before I realised.
I will buy this book as I have only borrowed it from the library. It will be £6.99 well spent.
And yes, I agree with all other readers, it would make an INCREDIBLE movie.
This book was so awesome! It beats Twilight by a mile. They should not just make a movie out of it, but make an unwind 2!!
I went and used this book for a multiple genre paper at my school. At first, it didn’t look like a decent book, but I realize how much of a great book it is! Even with a slightly disturbing story concept, it is almost impossible to put down. GREAT JOB NEAL SHUSTERMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I couldnt stop reading Unwind! Then, once I had finnished the book, I couldnt stop talking about it. Unwind is a great, thought provoking book.
This book was sooooooo good it was mind-blowing. To even imagine a world like that is pretty scary and intense,Neal Shusterman did an amazong job capturing readers attention,I loved this book!!
this book is awesome. its perfect. when i started reading it. i was so into it. i never really liked reading, but after i read unwind it was like whoa!!!!!!!!! i think everybody should read this book its really good
this book is off the hook!!!!!!!! :)
To everyone asking about a sequel, the author wasn’t going to write a sequel, but after getting some ideas, he decided to write a sequel called “Unwholly”, which will be released in about 2.5 years. Also, there is a chance of a movie and he was already asked to have it made into a movie.
Wow, this is my favorite book, even beating the Twilight series!! I think that there should be a sequel and a movie!
I loved Unwind! I thought it was better than the Twilight series, and I’m SO excited for the sequel, Unwholly! Yay!
I JUST finished this book about 40 minutes ago and i couldnt believe how great of a book it was! At first I wasnt sure how good it was going to be.. I always have a hard time getting into books right away. But as I started reading I realized how much I loved the depth of this book! It makes you realize how lucky you are just to be able to be alive! And I absolutely LOVED how the end grabbed me and I just couldnt put the book down until I knew exactly what happened.
Full of action, suspense, tragedy, and happiness, this book I highly recommend! And I’m 16, so I was kinda able to relate to the characters ages since they were close to mine (:
For all of those wondering, Unwind will have a sequal called UnWholly and will be a movie. The release dates of both of these are unknown.
Recommend- Everlost, Full Tilt, Downsiders.
my whole year at my school have to read this book for english, we all really wernt looking forward to it but as soon as we started reading we couldnt put the book down, the characters are amazingl written and the scenes are so strong and powerful, wonderful book.
:)
this is the best book i ever read. the characters are simply a great trio. it had a kinda creepy part on Roland but other that that, it was really good
My Junior year, second semester our whole English class had to read this book. None of us had our own copy, so our teacher read it to us. At the time, I was going through some medical things, so I wasn’t in class a lot. But what I did catch of the book was very mesmerizing to me. The whole time she had read it, I just imagined all these things in my head, and I couldn’t wait to hear more of it the next day, I was honestly upset that I couldn’t be there everyday. I thought about the book so much, that the summer after Junior year, I checked it out from the public library. I’m the type of person that likes books, but can never find one interesting enough to keep me reading, but something about this book got me hooked. It took me three months to read, but it was really more like three or four weeks, I just never continuously read it. I just finished it, and honestly, I wish I didn’t. I still want to be reading it. I’m thinking about reading it another time. I talk about it everywhere I go, and some people think it seems morbid, but it’s really not. It’s honestly the best book that I’ve ever read, and I hope more people take interest in it. It makes me want to read even more, if anyone knows of any other books like it, I’d love to know. I’m thinking of reading Everlost, I think it seems good too. Also, I know it’s already been posted, but the sequel is Unwholly, and the movie is supposed to come out 2011. I really look forward both!(: Seriously, GO READ THIS BOOK!
Btw, ‘Nice socks.’ (; Haha.
<3
Risa,
Thanks, for such thoughtful comments. I am glad that you enjoyed Unwind, and you definitely should try some of Neil Shusterman’s other books, perhaps Everlost, which we wrote about here.
You might also enjoy Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games, which explores some similar ideas. We wrote about that one here.
Happy reading!
Barry
This book was one of the best book that I have ever read, what Conner, Risa, and Lev go through is just right in your face in complete detail. The ending to me was very surprising though when Rholand gets unwound. And Conner is just about to, man there is a lot of suspense in this reading. I rated this book in my school a four out of five star.
:-)
Great book. Part where Roland gets unwound intriged me yet sent shivers down my spine>
i never did like reading. untill i found this book that i was forced to read for a class. im 14 years old and i couldnt believe that i would ever love a book so much. i was amazed. once i started reading, i couldnt stop! so i read on any spare time i had. i just finished the book today. so if your looking for a good book, i recemend it! i hope they come out with # 2 or even a movie! if u know plz email me at Trevdog009@wowway.com and i strongly recemend this amazing book!
Amzing book. I was assigned this book for a book club and was upset because it didn’t look intreasting — never judge a book by its cover came into play. This book was amazing, I finished it twice as fast as any of my group members, I loved it.
great book… really really awsome
loved this book. Even though a lot of it really pissed me off… who would do that to there kid?
i had to read it for a school project.
turned our it was really amazing!
i loved everything about it!!
though connor and risa should have gotten together sooner, though- it was expected the whole time. also i was upset that lev and those two didnt reunite, maybe they will though… needs a sequel- and a movie!!
amazing ending. love love love!
In my opinion this is a book for the records! i have read it 3 times and each time i get a little more out of it. all of the characters are so unique, and the style inwhich its written makes you almost believe you are Risa or Connor. i couldnt put it down, and when Hedescribes the unwinding process from the point of view of a character it still makes me cry. this book is great because the author doesnt really pick a side in the war, he has the pro’s and con’s of each, and tells the story without that choice. i am addicted to this novel, but if it were made into a movie i dont think there would be a way to capture all of the emotions. =]
OMG i would so recommend this book to every one
PEOPLE NEED TO MAKE THIS A MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
People should also make accessories for the book, like twilight does.
-Sofia, her cousin- This book was really good, i loved how they showed each characters thoughts in a different “chapter.” The detail was great, i felt like i was actually there. I loved how the characters weren’t talking to us but more to themselves. Even though it was in third person. My favorite part was when Roland described what actually happend in the chop shop, It wasn’t scary, but disturbing. It made me think of how cruel that parents in that world were. I mean imagine if your mother of father sent you off to a harvest camp to die.
Over all this was a really really REALLY awesome book. I recommend it to all my friends and even did a blog for it in my school newspaper. I as well as my cousin Rachel agree they should make this into a movie.
i rate it 5 out of 4! lol
nice job neal!

AND IF THERES A MOVIE OF IT I WANT TO BE RISA SOOOOOOOOOOO Badly!!!!!!!!!!
Yes yes, praise for Unwind. A heartwrenching story from begining to end. I know that many of you are awaiting a sequel, yes of course. There is going to be a sequel coming out something around… well the exact date is unknown. But as an avid follower of the Neal Shushterman scene, I read his blogs. The sequel is going to be titled Unwholly.
Many of you are also waiting on a movie, and there are rumors sprouting about that there will, indeed, be a movie. Though I, my personal opinion, believe that the movie will come after the second book is finished and published.
Good to know that someone else cried when Roland is being unwound. Even the second time reading it i bawled my eyes out. Loved this book, it really makes you think about the value of life and when life truly ends, begins. A weird soulution to abortion i would have to say though. I liked the Humphrey-Dunffey part in the story, it was a weird twist. A movie would be great as long as the script stayed close to the book and not changed alot like the twilight movie.
I cann’t believe how beautiful this book was. How deep and how it just made you appriciate having your own eyes ears heart everything. I actually have my own answer to Hayden’s poll I’d like everyone to answer.
Would you rather die or be unwound?
I chose unwound because I never want to die. But when you think about it your going to the Devine either way.
I first saw this book when my cousin was reading it. She was really absorbed in it, and seeing as we don’t get to see each other often, i guessed it must be pretty good. So naturally, after i asked to read it, i had to wait after my brother and sister (particularly slow readers) read it, before i could. But when i finally got it, i understood why my cousin was so interested in it…it ranked up there in my top 10 favorite books…(and trust me, i read a LOT of books). So I told my friend (another bookworm) about it (she’s basically read the whole library), and she seemed interested in it. She takes my advice pretty slowly, seeing as i’m not her best friend, so she has yet to read it. I recommend this book to pretty much anyone who reads my recommendation. It was really awesome…i finished it in about 2 and a half hours (i read really fast, especially since i’ve read the Harry Potter books 7 times each) Is the sequel to it called Unwholly?? I thought Connor was the best character. Thanks Neal Shusterman for another great book in my life. :)
Would i rather be unwound or die?
Die, definitely. The book said that you got the person’s characteristics if you got a peice of an unwound person. I don’t want anybody doing the same things i do. I like myself as an individual teenager, not a bunch of me in 20 different people. Besides, life gets pretty lonesome after a while, and wouldn’t you want to be with loved ones in the afterlife? (if you believed in one). I wouldn’t like to live forever, unlike Storm. And sure, you save people’s lives when you donate stuff, but they can have my major organs after i die.
I absolutely loved this book. I have not read a book for 3 years…until this one. Every book I’ve read I’ve given up on. By far, my all time favorite book. I recomend this to anyone & everyone. Now, does anyone know Risa’s full name?
if you like this book read the Hunger Games
If you like this read the Hunger Games
i really wanna read this but i dont know how i can get a copy. i also wanna read the hunger games, dormia , and the london eye mysteries.
En petite française que je suis, je l’ai lu, traduit en français.
Livre magnifique, je cherche à présent la version originale afin d’avoir véritablement le style d’écriture de Neal Shusterman.
I finished it in 8 hours, or in other words, did nothing in school but chill at the library and read, which is no big deal since i’m a pretty good student ;)
Once you start reading you never stop, can’t wait till unwholly comes out!!!
hey, what do u think are the top ten most important parts of this book .. unwind???
i would like to get every ones opinion
thanks =]
i’d rather die as myself than live as somebody else

hi collin
bye collin
help i have to write a persuasive paper about pro-life or pro-choice and i don’t know what to do!!!
aj, one thing that you might want to do is to go to your local library and see if they have the book Abortion : opposing viewpoints by James D. Torr. This book gives you ideas on both side of the debate that you might use in your paper. You could also ask the librarians at your library to help you find some articles from magazines that argue one side or the other of the topic. Good luck with the paper.
please help!
Barry, thank you for helping me with my project. Do you think that you can suggest more books?
aj, since your library might not have the same books as the library where I work, the best thing to try is to go to your library’s online catalog, and try searching for books with keywords like “abortion,” “pro-choice,” “pro-life” and so on. These searches should pull up some titles that you might find useful in working on your paper. Your library probably also subscribes to some databases of magazine and newspaper articles, and you can search these databases using the same terms as above to find some useful articles. Good luck!
Thankyou for helping me, Barry!!! your information was very usefull!! I got an A+!!
Excellent! Nice work, aj.
i read it 3 times when i only had to read it once! :D
I love this book a read it twice already. Going to read it again!
wow! wow! wow!
where do i begin? i couldn’t put this book down. i was so into to the book i felt like i really know Connor, Riza and Lev. it really had me thinking could this be our future? i fell in love with the characters, who they were and what they stood for!
omg as a 17 girl i love Connor once a bad boy but tamed by Riza which was sweet their relationship. and Levs coming into his own person i could relate in some what, i grew up as a preachers daughter i understand the need to be perfect to fit the pretty mold the people thought we were. but like i said this book was great i could not pout it down! i read it everywhere it was powerful it made me think and feel! i cant wait for the 2nd and 3rd book and i even looked up and i think they are making a movie omg if they do im gonna flip out :))))) http://unwindmovie.com/UNWINDMOVIE/home….(less)
I literally finished this book an hour ago. It was AMAZING. It made me think about questions most people tend to avoid in real life. My opinion on abortion still hasn’t changed, but I definitely rethought it. The big question that keeps nagging at me is the whole “Are you still alive after being unwound?”. I feel like my imediate answer should be no, and feel a little guilty that it wasn’t. I’m a big believer in science. The logic that you’re still technically alive makes sense to me. So does the logic that you’re not. I don’t have an answer to the question, and doubt I ever will. I don’t think anyone can have one. However, I have to take into account that I’m young, and my judgement is flawed (I’m thirteen). I’m going to have to read this again when I’m older.
this book was really AMAZING. At first no one wanted it for our book club but as soon as i started reading i didn’t want to stop…LOVE IT!!!!
[…] Another Review of Unwind […]
[…] Yes, sometimes it takes a book, a movie, a film, and even mores, individuals to make you take a step back and appreciate what you have,t hat you have had all along, and often without realization. Such is the case with Unwind. […]
ngl im in class reading this and omg its insane
